THE EP
Self Released 06.2007
The first the world had ever heard of Betty Rats came forth in the form of a pink felt EP. The eight song debut which is no longer available in hard copy included wildly visionary songs on subjects ranging from chickens, babies, and old people to talk shows and brain activity.
With a love for the earthiness and the more elemental sounds of acoustic instruments, Betty Rats incorporates acoustic guitar, banjo, bass, drums, and an old bell set to tell these quirky tales. In contrast to what follows the EP starts off with a jumbled track of looped guitars and edited sounds in a Dadaist fashion setting the stage for a disjointed ride through the psyche of Betty Rats.
Freak-Folk would be the easiest genre to label Betty Rats due to the instrumentation and execution, but the songs are so much more than the music. The true spirit of Betty Rats lies in the lyrics. Bags, on the surface a typical country shuffle, is a brazen, no holds barred, satirical look at the commercial side of Nashville's country music. Taking you on a journey through the woods, Escape from the Nursing Home tells the tale of an old man who frees himself from the shackles of an assisted living center and finds a new life in the wilderness. The EP closes with a chaotic, improvised number about television, love, and lusting after your reflection in a mirror.
